Detailed Event Information: The Summer 2010 Aquathlon Series will take place at Randolph Pool located at 200 S Alvernon (just south of Broadway on Alvernon). The Aquathlon Series is a series designed to be fun, relaxed and non-intimidating and offers an encouraging atmosphere for beginner athletes while also providing a consistent course for those seasoned athletes wishing to track improvements or get in a speed workout Theme Night: This year's theme night is Super Heroes Dress as your favorite Super Hero! Prizes for best dressed, most creative, etc. Date TBA!!! Youth info!! A youth distance will be offered on the Monday nights listed on the Aquathlon Calendar. Youth distance consists of a 200yard swim (8 lengths) and a 1 mile run. Youth distance is not offered on Wednesday nights however youth may complete adult distance on Wednesday nights if they so choose. Youth completing three (3) youth distance races will be eligible for youth series awards and championship race. All participants 17 & younger must have parent or guardian complete a waiver prior to participation. Youth age groups are: 6 & Under, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14. Youth fee = $3 See “Waiver” below to print out a waiver and sign ahead of time if parent is not accompanying child. Adult Distances: 800swim/3 mile run. The swim consists of 32 lengths in a 25 yard pool. Swimmers will be “seeded” according to their estimated 800 yard swim time and placed in lanes with swimmers of similar swimming ability. Last summer we typically had 4 waves or heats of swimmers and the order of each wave/heat would alternate each week. The run is an “out and back” and runners exit the east gate of the pool area, run out to the bike path and run counter clockwise to the turnaround located just north of 22nd street. Runners then turn around and run back to the finish line which is located on the bike path due east of the pool. Start time: Races start at 7:00 pm and registration will take place
from **In order to eliminate sign-up lines, we have added select Monday nights to the racing schedule. During weeks with two races, you may race Monday or Wednesday night, but not both. Cost: The cost is $8 per race and youth (14 and under) are $3. Relays are $15 per team. Waiver: All participants must sign a waiver prior to participation. Once a waiver is signed, it will be kept on file and may be updated if needed throughout the summer. Please note that all participants under the age of 18 need parent or guardian’s signature on waiver prior to participation. Once the waiver has been signed, it will be kept on file. You may print out a copy of the Youth Waiver (click to open) and have parent/guardian sign if he/she is unable to be present at aquathlon. Series info: New this summer: You must COMPLETE 5 races in order
to be eligible for Series Awards. This means that should a race/or both
races cancel due to inclement weather during week 8, your standings will
NOT be recalculated based on 4 races. Plan ahead! It is possible to complete a maximum of 8 (youth a maximum of 6) races throughout the summer (one each week) and series awards will be based on an individual’s 5 (3 for youth) fastest times. Series awards will be given three deep (men & women) in the following age groups: 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, etc Remember that you must complete at least five (5) races to be eligible for series awards. For individuals completing more than 5 races, placement will be determined by five (5) fastest times. For those athletes who “age up” during the summer, age on July 1st will determine age for the series standings. Results: Results and series standings will be posted at www.swimandrun.com Swim Time: Each week participants will be asked to list their estimated 800 yard swim time. Waves are seeded based on swim time and the more accurate the swim times, the more efficient the event. For those who haven’t been in the water in a long time, a test swim is a great idea! Aquathlon Swim Tip: Based on participation numbers in years past, athletes will most likely swim 3 or 4 to a lane and will be required to “circle swim”. What this means is that athletes are assigned to a lane based on projected swim time with swimmers of similar swimming abilities (this is why it’s important to be as accurate as possible). Athletes within each lane will be started 10 seconds apart and will always swim on the right side of the black line located on the bottom of the pool. Swimming etiquette tip: If you catch up to the person in front of you and would like to pass, gently tap the toes of the person in front of you to let them know you are attempting a pass and then pass them after a turn at the wall. It is the responsibility of the swimmer doing the passing to speed up and pass the slower swimmer and continue with that faster speed. If this sounds confusing or intimidating, don’t worry, it’s easy!! |
